Two numbers get thrown around a lot: fasting insulin and HbA1c. They sound related, and they are, but they measure different things on different timelines. Understanding the difference is one of the more useful things you can do with a first lab panel—no supplement funnel required.

HbA1c: the three-month average

Hemoglobin is the protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen. When glucose is in your bloodstream, some of it sticks to hemoglobin—a process called glycation. Because red blood cells live about three months, measuring the *glycated* fraction (HbA1c) gives a rolling average of your glucose exposure over that window [1].

Fasting insulin: the effort meter

Insulin is the hormone that moves glucose out of the blood and into cells.   • A single number rarely tells a story. Providers read fasting insulin and HbA1c together, usually alongside fasting glucose and a lipid panel, and against your history—sleep, stress, medications, family history, menstrual and hormonal patterns.
  • “Normal” and “optimal” aren't always the same conversation. Reference ranges flag disease thresholds; a longevity-minded reading also considers trends over time. That's why baselines in your 20s and 30s are valuable—they give future-you a comparison point.
  • Context changes interpretation. For example, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is commonly associated with insulin resistance, and skin and cycle symptoms can be part of that broader picture.
