Iron and ferritin: the storage tank, not just the tank gauge
A standard blood count can look "normal" while your iron stores are running low. Ferritin is the marker that reflects stored iron, and it can fall before full anemia develops. Iron deficiency, with or without anemia, is a well-documented cause of fatigue, and it is especially common in menstruating and recently pregnant women [2][3].
This matters for two of the most overloaded groups imaginable: women in midlife still menstruating while carrying a caregiving load, and women in the months after giving birth, when iron stores are often depleted by pregnancy and delivery [3]. Here is the thread connecting all four markers: they overlap. Low iron, an underactive thyroid, low B12, and low vitamin D can each cause fatigue, and more than one can be present at once. Testing one in isolation can miss the others.
